Right and Wrong in Buddhism [This is the transcript of a talk given by Eido Michael Luetchford as one of a series of lectures to people interested in Buddhism in Miami in March ] Don’t produce wrong. Practicing the many kinds of or Naturally purifies the mind.
This is the teaching of the buddhas. I shall try to explain the terms right and wrong. Rishi Kanada, the author of Vaiseshika philosophy says in the opening Sutra: "That which brings Nisreyasa and Abhyudaya (supreme bliss and exaltation), is Dharma.
That which elevates you and brings you nearer to God is right. That which takes you down and away from God is wrong. I like to believe that there is no right and wrong. It’s a relative concept, a perception that which one is more accepting of becomes one’s right and that which one does not accept or is resistant towards, becomes a wrong.
Through my personal ex. (5) “Wrong” does not become right by virtue of passing time. It is certainly the case that the public’s conscience sometimes becomes dull with the passing of years, so that what once was horrifying eventually becomes commonplace. But wrong still is wrong, though a millennium passes.
Eventually, there will be accountability (2 Cor. Matters of right and wrong have long been the province of moral philosophers and ethicists. In Buddhism, dharma is the doctrine, the universal truth common to all individuals at all times, proclaimed by the Buddha. Righteousness is the quality or state of being morally correct and justifiable. It can be considered synonymous with "rightness" or being "upright".
